Jude Michelle Korleh Nortey has been elected the 66th President of the Students' Representative Council (SRC) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST), becoming only the second woman in the University's history to hold the office.
Official results declared by the SRC Electoral Commission on Wednesday showed that Nortey secured a decisive victory, polling 10,435 votes, representing 56.71% of the total valid votes cast in a contest involving eight presidential candidates.
Kelvin Obeng Fosu finished second with 4,024 votes (21.87%), followed by Forstell Ehun, who obtained 1,981 votes (10.77%). Nana Yaw Boateng Agyekum polled 1,172 votes (6.37%), while Modicious Oye Tunde secured 275 votes (1.49%). Ian Osam Gyan received 155 votes (0.84%), Joseph Boahen Akomeah garnered 110 votes (0.60%), Benjamin Selasie Osei obtained 81 votes (0.44%), and Yakubu Wunpini Abdulai polled 60 votes (0.33%).
The election also produced winners for three other executive positions.
Stephanie Akosua Asiedu was elected General Secretary, polling 8,087 votes (43.95%) to defeat Anita Ofori Antwi, who secured 5,865 votes (31.88%), and Phyllis Boakyewaa Osafo, who obtained 4,102 votes (22.29%).
For the position of Financial Secretary, Kwabena Nantwi-Gyebour emerged victorious with 10,754 votes (58.45%), ahead of Abdulai Abdul-Latif, who received 4,340 votes (23.59%), and Franklin Afari Boafo, who polled 2,903 votes (15.78%).
Rebecca Awinbila was elected Women's Commissioner, securing 2,637 votes (29.65%). Jessica Yankey finished second with 2,438 votes (27.41%), followed by Maame Esi Kum Enyimayew with 1,942 votes (21.83%). Baaba Aseda Asare polled 705 votes (7.93%), Ruth Abena Oforiwaa Boah obtained 645 votes (7.25%), while Elizabeth Crosby Kwartemaah received 415 votes (4.67%).
According to the Electoral Commission, 18,514 students were verified to participate in the election, with 18,400 ballots cast, representing a voter turnout of more than 99% among verified voters. The Commission also reported that 8,895 women voted, while 114 verified students did not cast their ballots.
